Unfortunately I could not find the commercial for “McCain Slow Cooker Solution” so if you haven’t seen it; I will give you the outline. The mom comes home from her day, the daughter is on the phone and says “mom call me when dinners ready” then a second later she says “one second someone’s on the other line”, and answers it. It is the mom and she says “dinners ready” and the girl screams as if it was way to fast. It is actually pretty funny although I find this commercial rather sexist and stereotypical. In the other McCain Slow Cooker Solution commercial the father is in the garage working on his car (very stereotypical) and the wife comes home, walks in the front door and the husband says “eh honey let me know when dinners ready” and a second later she walks in the garage door and says “dinners ready” and the husband screams.
I find this commercial very sexist because why does it have to be the mother cooking dinner?.. How come the mom gets home and the first thing they say is “let me know when dinners ready”. They could show how easy it is to make by having the teenage girl be like “great mom your home, dinner will be ready in a minute” something like that. Why did the father have to be working on his car in the garage? He could have been doing something else. The dad could have come home instead of the mother.

I find it humerous how I have never seen this commercial, yet i can picture exactly what you are explaining. It iz the same situation in ever cooking or cleaning commercial. It is always the mother scrubbing the dishes or baking the pie , not to mention that the wife is always good looking ( but thats a entire different issue). Although i do admit,It would be a bit odd watching a commercial where the father is knitting a sweater, or fixing the garden. But the only reason i say this is because the way mothers are portrayed in not only commercials but in movies and television as well. I would love to see a new show on the WB featuring your average American family, with the husband as the stay at home dad.
I love how carol just spelled "is" like "iz" lmao.
anyways.
Carol is right, the way that media has portrayed woman in the past to the present, is the way we expect things to be seen. I bet most teenagers (other than us thanks to this media course) have absolutely no idea just how sexist these commercials are, because they think that is the norm, and that's the way society is supposed to work. Just like carol said ANNNDD II QUOTE, "
Although i do admit,It would be a bit odd watching a commercial where the father is knitting a sweater, or fixing the garden." She did follow by saying I only say this because, and basically answered that with what I had just previously said, but still, you get the drift. Maybe one day commercials will change, but I highly doubt it.
I definitely think that a television show with the "average American family" with a stay at home dad would be a great idea!
I also 100% agree that before this media class I did not realise just how sexist our society still is. People say we have come so far as women in the fact that we can vote, and are welcomed to jobs such as construction or mechanics, yet we still live by everyday stereotypes of the fact that the wife "should be doing the laundry, cooking dinner, etc".
Things could change, but only if the advertising industry decided too, but since their stereotypical commercials seem to work, i also doubt that change will occur any time soon.
I completely agree with all of you, media really has portrayed women the same in the present as in the past and I don’t think this will change either because like Carol said “It would be a bit odd watching a commercial where the father is knitting a sweater, or fixing the garden”. Media has really created these norms that people need to follow in order to fit in, or else suffer being judged made fun and more. Also just like you all said I also agree that change isn’t going to be happening anytime soon, because when the media is making money everything else doesn’t matter to them.
